Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is originally used for the treatment of major burns on the skin, and then find the application in general, orthopedic and urogenital surgery, as well as in dentistry (periodontal, oral and peri implant surgery).

ADM is a collagen matrix obtained from tissues of human origin from a number of technologically complex procedures. This matrix has preserved ultra structural integrity, as well as all the elements required for revascularization and cell repopulation. ADM is composed of collagen, elastin, the connection of blood vessels and proteins that help revascularization, cell propagation and tissue remodeling. After ADM implantation into the tissue of the host, his blood infiltrates it trough preserved blood vessels, leading host stem cells that bind to proteins in the matrix.

Acellular dermal graft is being used in muccogingival surgery as a substitute for palatal donor tissue in the treatment of isolated or multiple gingival recessions, the expansion of attached gingiva, in peri implant plastic surgery and therapy of peri implant defects, guided tissue regeneration and extraction wound and soft tissue management.

The main advantage over the connective tissue graft is less discomfort and thus easier postoperative course.
